So I had the Lucy Reed/Bill Evans CD but had never played it - until three days ago. I LOVE this woman's voice and interpretations of classic songs. LOVE. So I immediately bought this one (she only did three albums - she's as good as any of the other more famous chanteuses from that era - such of the draw, I guess), and it's incredible/5(6).

Lucy Reed was an appealing but little known jazz vocalist who performed around Chicago in the '50s. The cool-toned Reed, who appreciated cool school singers like Chris Connor and June Christy, lived in different parts of the Midwest -- she was born Lucille Reed in Marshfield, Wisconsin in went to high school in St. Paul, MN in the late '30s/early '40s and lived in Milwaukee, WI, Iron City.

Discriminating listeners tended to become admirers of Lucy Reed from the moment they first heard her intelligent, unaffected, pitch-perfect singing. Among them were Woody Herman and Charlie Ventura, who hired her to sing with their bands. Later, she turned down an offer from Duke Ellington because the travel would have threatened a stable life for her young son. Even though her two albums for.
